Hello and bonjour!
My name is Alo (they/he) and I'm a counselling intern at Couch of Hope, as well as a Masters of Counselling Psychology student. I am a neurodiverse and queer friend, sibling, neighbour, and fiancé. In my spare time, I love to read romance novels, watch horror movies, listen to various genres of music, learn about new topics and try new crafting hobbies. Additionally, I am bilingual, fluent in both French and English.
I hold a Masters of Gender and Sexuality, and studied psychology and sociology at Saint Mary's University. I have published works on eating disorders, fat liberation, gender, and queer experiences. I have spent my life working in health fields, from hospital volunteering to student disability advocate. I work from a trauma-informed framework and a social justice orientation, recognizing the influence of oppression, social norms and roles play in daily life. I strongly believe that is my duty to speak up against discrimination and to utilize privilege to amplify the voices of those that are marginalized, and this reflects itself in my counselling work. Only as a unified community can we make changes, and with change comes growth.
I specialize in queer and disabled experiences, with a focus on teen and young adult populations. I am a good match for clients who are comfortable exploring their past and current selves through a compassionate lens, as well as taking a collaborative and integrative approach at therapy to help develop the present and future you want. A session with me differs from client to client, as I strive to provide counselling that is tailored for each individual. I enjoy highlighting and utilizing individual strengths, and integrating comforts into our therapeutic work, with past experience allowing me to integrate different cultural and religious views, as well as music into sessions. Additionally, I utilize self-reflection, exploring attachment patterns, and the role of emotionality in day-to-day life.
It would be my honor to help you reach your counselling goals, and to help arm you with the coping skills necessary to get there.
